What do you mean by "a green schoolyard"?
A green schoolyard is a space in which children can explore and interact with
the natural world in a school garden, in a pond area, through a solar energy
pump, or simply by sitting in the shade and watching birds and butterflies go
by. It provides opportunities for hands-on learning within all areas of the curriculum.
Who maintains a green schoolyard?
Ideally green schoolyards are maintained by the students, teachers and parents of the
school. Neighbors may also be a resource for this essential aspect of
sustaining the schoolyard.
How does SFGSA work?
Formed in March 2001, the San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance (SFGSA)
promotes inclusive, community-driven processes that create and maintain healthy,
environmentally sustainable learning environments in San Francisco's schools.
